RESNET HERS stands for Residential Energy Services Network Home Energy Rating System. It is a nationally recognized system used to measure and rate the energy efficiency of homes. The HERS Index is a scoring system that compares the energy performance of a given home to a reference home built to the 2006 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC). A HERS Index score is like a miles-per-gallon sticker for a home.
The HERS Index is a numerical scale where a lower score indicates greater energy efficiency. A standard new home built to the 2006 IECC code receives a HERS Index score of 100. If a home scores a 70 on the HERS Index, it is 30% more energy efficient than the reference home. Similarly, if a home scores 130, it is 30% less efficient than the reference home.
