The Building Performance Institute (BPI) is the nation's leading building science accreditation organization. The "house as a system" philosophy - which looks at a building's various components (building envelope, attic, basement, combustion equipment, ventilation sources) and the interrelationship between them to maximize a home's performance. This approach leads to greater energy efficiency, but perhaps more importantly to buildings that simply work better. A home that has been analyzed and upgraded from a whole-house standpoint is more durable, healthier, more comfortable, and more energy efficient. For more information about BPI's standards, take a look at their Technical Standards for Building Analysts (PDF)
Efficiency First is a national nonprofit trade association that unites the Home Performance workforce, building product manufacturers and related businesses and organizations in the escalating fight against global warming and rising energy costs. Efficiency First represents its members in public policy discussions at the state and national levels, to promote the benefits of efficiency retrofitting and to help our industry grow to meet unprecedented demand for quality residential energy improvements.
RESNET (short for the Residential Energy Services Network), is the premier accreditation organization for home energy raters and home energy auditors in the country. With an emphasis on new construction, RESNET certified HERS Raters (HERS is short for Home Energy Rating System) to analyze each element of home that may contribute to energy waste or energy inefficiencies. During a HERS Rating, we analyze each of these components, as well as their relationship to one another, to assign the home a score from 1-100 on the HERS Index. (100 is bad, 0 is good.) HERS Ratings are a mandatory part of the certification process for many green building certifications including Energy Star and LEED.
The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and its community are changing the way buildings and communities are designed, built and operated. We believe in better buildings; places that complement our environment and enhance our communities. Places that give people better, brighter, healthier spaces to live, work and play.
Green building is a win-win, offering both both environmental and economic opportunity. Greater building efficiency can meet 85 percent of future demand for energy in the United States and a commitment to green building has the potential to generate 2.5 million jobs.
As NAHB (National Association of Home Builders) Green Verifiers, we are certified to inspect and ensure that green building practices said to be implemented by contractors or builders have been properly executed. Builders, contractors, and others associated with the construction of a project are not able to self-certify their practices. Rather, a third-party trained and verified by the NAHB is required to ensure the validity and thoroughness of methods used. This is where we come in.
When verifying, we inspect every "green" point said to be made by those working on the project. We then submit a Verification Report to the NAHB Research Center, who reviews the report for completion and accuracy before the project. Additionally, you can take a look at the NAHB site to find a complete list of resources on green building.
Energy Star Certification for new homes is a powerful way to distinguish your home(s) from the competition. In an era of turbulent, but generally increasing, energy costs, more and more homebuyers are becoming attuned to the benefits of an energy efficient home. Energy Star for Homes, a certification that falls under the umbrella of the EPA's well-known Energy Star brand, is a powerful quality assurance program that ensures that a home is energy efficient, safe, and healthy.
We are qualified to administer Energy Star Home certification, and are also happy to serve as a consultant to architects, builders, and homeowners during the design/build process to ensure that a project meets all Energy Star requirements.
