National Green Building Standard

The National Green Building Standard (NGBS) is a program that was developed by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) in collaboration with other organizations. NGBS sets the benchmark for green and sustainable residential construction, providing guidelines and certification criteria that address lot design and development, resource efficiency, water efficiency, energy efficiency, indoor environmental quality, and building operation and maintenance. 

Our Process

Our team of certified experts diligently follows the NGBS Green Certified Checklist to certify a home as NGBS Green compliant. 


NGBS Green Certified Checklist Overview

  • Lot Development: Includes floodplain, lot slope, soil preparation for new plants, regionally appropriate vegetation, and protection of natural resources. 
  • Resource Efficiency: Includes capillary break, foundation drainage, dampproof walls, sealed crawlspace, dry insulation, water-resistive barrier, flashing, tile backing materials, ice and water shield, architectural features, visible suspect fungal growth, exterior doors, roof overhangs, and roof water discharge. 
  • Energy Efficiency: Includes mandatory requirements, adopting entity review, duct testing, radiant and hydronic space heating, building thermal envelope air sealing, air sealing and insulation, high-efficacy lighting, appliances, clothes washers, energy performance pathway, energy prescriptive pathway, space heating and cooling and water heating system efficiencies, duct leakage, high-efficacy lighting, and ERI target pathway.
  • Water Efficiency: Includes lavatory faucets, water closets, irrigation systems, and alternative compliance path. 
  • Indoor Environmental Quality: Includes gas-fired fireplaces and direct heating equipment, solid fuel-burning fireplaces, inserts, stoves and heaters, garages, carpets, carbon monoxide (CO) alarms, interior architectural coatings, local ventilation, whole dwelling ventilation, radon control, kitchen exhaust, MERV filters, and  HVAC system protection. 
  • Homeowner Operation and Maintenance: Includes homeowner's manual and training of initial homeowners.
